Session Guide
Session Guide: Milky Way Portraits
Milky Way portrait sessions are all about capturing you under a sky full of stars. Because we’re working in the dark with long exposures, these sessions feel very different from a typical daytime shoot. This guide walks you through what to expect and how to prepare so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
When Your Session Happens
Milky Way portraits are done late at night, often past midnight, when the core of the Milky Way is visible and the sky is at its darkest. We choose dates around the new moon and locations with low light pollution so the stars stand out clearly. Sessions can also be cold, even in warmer months, so plan for nighttime temperatures.
How the Photos Are Created
To capture the stars and the landscape, we use long exposures—your photo may take up to 20 seconds to record. At the end of the exposure, a flash is used to “freeze” you in place so you appear crisp and sharp against the sky. Because the camera is recording for several seconds, any movement during that time can create a soft, ghost‑like blur.
What You’ll Need to Do
-
Hold very still: Once we start the exposure, you’ll need to stay as still as possible until I say you’re done.
-
Follow simple posing cues: I’ll guide you into comfortable poses that are easy to hold for several seconds.
-
Be patient between shots: Each image takes time to capture and review, so the pace is slower than a daytime session.
What to Wear
-
Dress warmly: Layers, jackets, hats, and gloves are highly recommended, even in spring and fall.
-
Choose darker, solid colors: These tend to photograph best against the night sky and help keep the focus on you.
-
Comfortable shoes: We may be walking on uneven ground or in low light, so sturdy shoes or boots are ideal.
What to Bring
-
Extra layers or a blanket
-
Hand warmers (optional but helpful on colder nights)
-
Water and a small snack
-
Any personal items you’d like in the photos (within reason)
Safety and Comfort
Your safety and comfort come first. We’ll choose locations that are safe to access at night and take our time moving around in the dark. If at any point you feel too cold or uncomfortable, we can pause, warm up, and adjust.
After the Session
After your session, I’ll carefully select and edit the best images to bring out the detail in both you and the night sky. You’ll receive a private online gallery where you can view, favorite, and select your final images and any prints or products you ’d like to order.
